Gender Imbalance, Marriage Stability, and Divorce Rate: Evidence from China

报告内容摘要

Abstract：The deficit of eligible men or women in a regional marriage market is a commonly observed phenomenon stemming from factors such as “Missing Girls/Boys” at birth, higher mortality rates among men due to war, immigration, and domestic labor migration. However, the impact of this deficit on marriage stability remains not well understood. In this paper, using both province- and individual-level data in China, we find that a higher male-to-female ratio increases divorce rates. Further analyses support the hypothesis that this impact is primarily driven by married women having more options available outside their marriage. The impact is more pronounced in economies with greater income inequality, where more optional men are wealthier. These findings highlight the significance of gender balance in sustaining stable marriages and uncover a new contributing factor to the escalating divorce rates.

报告人简介

章元，经济学博士，复旦大学中国社会主义市场经济研究中心教授，中国民营经济50人谈成员，复旦—平安宏观经济研究中心副主任，《世界经济文汇》常务副主编。目前的研究领域为中国经济发展与城乡融合，包括农村贫困、农村金融、劳动力流动、中国经济发展模式等；曾先后在巴黎九大经济学院和牛津大学圣安东尼学院从事博士后和访问学者研究。在World Development, Economics Letters, China Economic Review等SSCI杂志以及《中国社会科学》、《经济研究》、《管理世界》、《金融研究》、《世界经济》、《经济学（季刊）》等国内权威期刊上发表过多篇学术论文；曾多次荣获省部级专著和优秀论文一等奖，以及上海市“曙光学者”、“浦江人才”、上海市社科新人、复旦大学优秀博士学位论文等荣誉称号。
